All dye sublimation id card printers use a ribbons with various panels depending on the requirements of the card output. The majority of cards require a ribbon with color panels, a black panel and a clear overlay panel. The panels, in combination, print a full color id card.
The clear overlay panel is the last panel that goes through the printer’s processes with a full color print. The panel is applied to the printed card and provides additional protection from wear and UV fading. Without this overlay, the card would need to have an overlaminate hand applied to the surface for needed protection.
