Tips to Design Your ID Badge

You are in charge of designing a professional looking badge that will represent your organization to the public. Starting off by thinking about the following points to best maneuver through your design process.

1. What format will the id card have? Will the card layout be vertical or horizontal?

The information required on the badge will help determine the format of the badge. The “fit” of the items may work one way over the other. A horizontal badge allows for long, large text fields while the vertical card is sleek in appearance.

2. Will there be a photo on the card?

Often there is a requirement for photos on the id card. How large will the photo be?

3. How much personal information will be printed on the card?

Depending on the requirements of your organization, there may be little personal information visible on the card or maybe quite a bit. It is recommended no more personal information than necessary be printed on the badge for security reasons. Although a personnel database may contain an extensive amount of personal data. Any printing on the card is subject to public viewing.

4. Will the backside of the card be printed?

Depending on the budget and requirements of the organization, a dual sided printer may not be an option. It is cost-efficient to produce single-sided id cards. The extra real estate on the back of the card may be needed for mission statements, bar codes, or other reasons. There are methods of printing on the back of the card with a single sided printer.

Once the items above are considered, it is recommended to make a list of the items that are required and on which side they will be placed. By fitting the items together in your badge design software, it is possible to review various design options by viewing the computer monitor or printing a sample card of your design.
