Many people who are responsible for making id cards for their organization wonder if they prepunch the plastic id card prior to printing the card or if the printing should happen prior to slot punching.
It is not recommended that a card be punched prior to printing. There is a raised edge on one side of the card after it is punched. The raised edge is significant enough that you should be able to feel it. If the edge comes in contact with the printer’s printhead, the printhead may be damanged.
Replacement printheads for most id card printers cost $500 or more. For this reason, we recommend that printing occurs prior to the hole punch.
